Antique Silver Châtelaine Brooch Pin Skeleton Keys

A châtelaine (French “lady of the castle”) in its original form is a belt hook worn by the lady of the castle, from which the keys of the castle were suspended. It was a form of jewelry that had its origins in practical use. Châtelaines came to support several chains from which accessories were suspended. Châtelaines were for women and men. Early examples suspended items like watch, seal, pocket knife, vile, and a writing instrument.

Amazing, Rare, Unique piece. Handmade quality. This brooch has 5 chains attached to 4 hollow interlocking rings. Each chain has a skeleton key attached. Keys are probably not original, but they sure are a clever addition. I see the word STERLING on the back of one of the rings, but lettering is very worn and can just barely be made out (see photo detail). I do not have a metal tester. SO, I AM NOT SELLING AS STERLING, even though it says it on the piece. You are buying it as SILVER TONE. If it turns out to be sterling, you're a winner!
